American black walnut & English oak burl top
Lambourn, Berkshire
Kivist Joinery was commissioned to design and make two feature console tables having previously worked with the client on other projects: dressing room, bathroom and bedside tables.
The brief was to create extra storage for the day-to-day items in two pieces of furniture that would reside in the kitchen and hall way. Primary design inspiration was taken from the clients’ oak burl stool and incorporates the Nordic clean and elegant lines that are the signature of Kivist Joinery.
Kivist liaised with a specialist to source the highly characterful wood for the top of the tables. Until the surface of the wood is prepared the character and grain pattern are unknown.

“Flattening the pieces and working on the surface revealed the natural texture and interesting patterns that are the focus of the final pieces. To keep the natural purity of the surface and stabilize the wood I used epoxy resin in the bigger cavities.
“The mixture of modern materials in harmony with nature’s own creations really helps to bring out the innate beauty of the wood.
“Beautiful grain and depth of colours in American Black Walnut made it my natural choice for the longer slender console table. The pieces for the legs were selected so that the grain tightened on descent, following the elegantly tapering design for the legs.” Henri Kivist
